Applying media theories and explanations to our music video

After researching and reading upon some media theories and explanations/links, I felt that I can relate some of these theories/explanations to our music video. 

One media explanation for music videos can be seen in Goodwin's Theory. Goodwin's Theory states that music videos can be associated with the following: links between the lyrics and visuals, links between music and visuals, genre characteristics, intertextual reference, notions of looking, performance, narrative and concept based music videos, and also the demands of the record label. 

Goodwin suggsts lyrics will make constant references to visuals on screen. In our music video, I felt that this theory has been applied accordingly. As you can see in our previous planning and our final product, we have made constant reference between lyrics and visuals on screen. For example, one point-of-view shot makes a reference of lyrics and visuals - Chris walks out of the shop and looks over at the opening times of the shop - and the lyrical match states "... Been wondering if your heart's still open and
if so I wanna know what time it shuts..."

Goodwin also suggests there is a genre characteristic in a music video. In our product, the genre is typical rock, however could be seen in sub-genres like Psychedelic rock, Garage rock, Indie rock or Stoner rock. The music can be seen as these particular genres due to the heavy, dirty guitar riffs, accompanied by the prominent bass line and the dark, jungle-style drums. In our product, the genre characteristic has been exploited through the night-time setting of when our footage was taken. We specifically chose the night-time to film as we felt the low, rock style of the music needed that visual element of dark references. Also, the narrative was heavily-influential on out decision of a night-time setting, which I will discuss further when talking about narrative analysis of Goodwin's theory.

The statement of 'Notions of Looking' is also seen in our music video. The Notions of Looking plays on the idea of gaze and the way characters are visualized and represented, for example - the female character as an object. Notions of Looking be seen in our music video with Chris being a teenager, and when seen to be getting ready, he makes sure his hair is right, checks himself in the mirror, etc. and this can be stereotypically relatable to most teenage boys.  

The structure concept of our music video is typically narrative-based, featuring no performance-based shots and only a story with a maximum of three characters. Narratives in music videos refer to the video denoting a particular story relating directly or indirectly to the music and lyrics (as explained earlier in my evaluation of Goodwin's Theory). Our music video particularly is of a linear mode, meaning it tells a story from start to end. However, also features a fragmented style due to showcasing the story in not necessarily the right order with the use of flashbacks.  

Magazine Ancillary Task: First Design

I have produced a first design of our ancillary task, a magazine advertisement for the single of our music video. 

The music magazine features Chris walking down a street with a dead-end sign. This dead-end sign denotes the friendship/relationship he has with Jess, the potential fact there could a dead-end to the relationship that Chris struggles but hopelessly perseveres to find. 

Photoshoot Session

Today, me and my working partner Chris went to the centre of our town and had a photoshoot of Chris in the town centre and the cathedral. I felt this session was very successful and gave us great opportunity to use these images I took in our ancillary products. 

Subsequent to this shoot, I have edited the photos in black and white which match the house style of theme. I have made some some advanced editing modifications further to this using the software paint.net (software inbetween Paint and Photoshop), and have modified such image properties as the contrast, saturation, image noise and shadow efficiency. These advanced modifications have been implemented as I feel a simple black and white filter does not show off the images full potential, often not producing clarity in the image and does not emphasise or sharpen the dark colours that beg prominence.

Artwork Design

As you can see from the image below, I have created a design for our artwork front cover. This artwork will also be used in one shot which we plan to re-shoot. This shot is in the first scene where Chris looks at the music on his phone and goes to play Do I Wanna Know? by Arctic Monkeys. 

Two new scenes filmed!

Last night, me and Chris filmed our final two scenes, hurray! 

I feel there was sufficient footage and most of scenes were very successful. However, an unsuccessful scene occurred when we tried to gain permission to film on our local bus company - Stagecoach. After three attempts with three different bus drivers, we were getting nowhere in terms of shooting a bus scene with Chris. 

Despite our rejection, we went ahead and filmed Chris on the bus - on our fourth attempt at getting on the bus. Difficulties were filming discretely without the knowledge of the bus driver or the other bus driver that hitchhiked a journey too.

Update: Current Footage and Future Filming

With out current footage, we have edited as much as we can and we now plan to film our last two scenes - which we have planned to shoot tomorrow night (10.12.13). This location will be set in our home town, the city centre. We plan to shoot Scenes 3, 4, 6 and 7, of which are a shop scene (4,6,7) and a bus scene (3). 

Regarding our current footage, we are having problems with the quality of the clips. We have experienced a 'grainy' and pixelated quality to our footage which we feel could affect our coursework quality. Also, we have recognized that Scene 5, has excellent opportunity to include amazing glare from the sun when we filmed that day. 

Initial Design Ideas: Magazine Ancillary

Band name decision

Me and my working partner Chris have decided to call our band name 'Murder of Crows'. We feel that this band name suits the black and white theme of our music video - the blackness also suiting the horrible feelings of being led on, Chris' feelings towards being led on and when you eventually have the knowledge that something like that has gone behind your back - consequently, in this context, Chris' broken heart (aw).

Initial Design Ideas: Digipak Ancillary

Me and my working partner Chris have collectively decided to have a black and white themed design for our ancillary task: the digipak. I have made an initial draft of the digipak, but have not included any real text content, just designed the basic front cover and have placed rough guides for the structure: the flap opening for the artwork and lyrics booklet (on the inside contents page) and the CD page, showing a rough look for where the CD will be in terms of the digipak design and dimensions.

Post-filming Evaluation

Today, me and my working partner Chris have filmed the planned scenes (shown in my previous blog post) - Scene 5, 9 and 10. We filmed these scenes which involve Jess, of which Scene 5 and 9 is another flashback in the music video. I felt this filming session went very well considering the constraint of timings we had (only an hour to film three whole scenes in detail, capturing more footage than we need). 

When looking back at the footage, we have the same problem with the quality of the footage. Scene 5 has significant quality issues - the picture looking grainy and there being no real clarity with the footage.

SCENE 5 - Chorus 1.1: (1'13" - 1'34") FLASHBACK: Chris is with Jess on the sofa, watching television together and they sing the chorus whilst sitting on the sofa.

I play the boy who walks out of Jess' house, creating the idea that Jess was in fact with another boy whilst leading Chris on. I walk past Chris walking out of Jess' house and Jess goes to try and get Chris back but he leaves in disappointment. 

Filming Progress

Tonight, me and my working partner Chris are filming the opening scene and second scene for our Music Video. The opening scene involves Chris acting - he is first shown to be texting, then getting ready to go out somewhere e.g. the earphones being put in, going to the bathroom, re-styling his hair, putting on his shoes, etc.

The second scene involves Chris walking out of his house, and into the street in the late evening. He walks towards the bus stop where he then gets on the bus (the third scene) - of which we plan to film back in Peterborough after school - conviently where there is a bus stop outside the school; we shall get permission to then film Chris on the bus on his journey to the shop or Jess' house (the girl he is talking to). 

During the process of filming this, we will be consulting our shot list that goes into detail of what shot it is, a description of what is happening, and whether there is any movement of the camera needed. Please see my blog post going into detail about the shot-by-shot list. 

I will be keeping this blog updated on how the shooting of the first two scenes go. 

Scene listing

Here is our initial plan for the order of which our scenes will be constructed in our music video, the bold, italic writing denotes the structure of the song and where it is in relation to:    Scenes

1. Introduction: (0'00" - 0'29" [29]) Chris receives a text from Jess - the girl who appears to be leading him on. Chris is then shown to be getting ready to go out somewhere. This is achieved by shots showing the earphones being put in, going to the bathroom, re-styling his hair, putting on his shoes, etc.
2. Verse 1: (0'30" - 1'12" [42s]) Chris leaves his house, and shots show him still texting Jess. The time of this scene is set at night and is very dark, with only the street lamps acting as adequate lighting for the music video.
3. Verse 1: Chris is waiting at the bus stop, then is shown to get on the bus. Various shots show Chris still texting her, but receives no reply. He gets off the bus and walks into the shop.
4. Verse 1: Chris is in the shop and looks for various items to purchase. However, all of these items are for his evening where he plans to surprise visit Jess at her house. Jess is unaware of his plan to come over, despite the texting that has taken place.
5. Chorus 1.1: (1'13" - 1'34" [21s]) FLASHBACK: Fade into... Chris and Jess are in the park together and Chris makes a move on Jess, Jess walks away from Chris - and decides to leave the food, walks down the alcohol isle and leaves the shop with some goods. 
6. Chorus 1.2: (1'35" - 1'59" [24s]) Chris is in the shop still, "crawlin' back to you" is the first shot and Chris' face seems sad on the reminiscing of the flashback. 
7. Verse 2: (2'00" - 2'42" [42s]) Chris leaves the shop - "...if so I wanna know what time it shuts" is synced with the shot of the opening times of the shop. Chris walks towards Jess' house, and is trying to ring her. "...on the cusp of trying to kiss you" has a flashback again of Chris trying to kiss Jess (for a second or so). Chris still rings and camera pans up to night sky. Fade to black...
8. Chorus 2.1: (2'43" - 3'04" [21s]) FLASHBACK: Chris is with Jess on the sofa, watching television together and they sing the chorus whilst together. "...that the nights were mainly made for saying things that you can't say tomorrow day" Both are on the phone and in the second section of Chorus 2...

In this lesson, me and my working partner Chris are planning for the filming stage. In the previous lesson we have written the plot to the narrative, and now we need to write a sequence list of all the initial shot ideas for the music video.

Initial Planning Session

Plot

A young man currently undergoing female trouble and tries talking to a girl. Over the course of the video, they are shown to be texting whilst on route to her house. The girl is unaware that he is planning to visit and she is leading him on. At this current point, the girl already has a boy over. When he arrives at the girl's house, he sees the girl, gets excited to see her then he sees the other boy. The boy is finishing getting dressed with the girl in her robes, implying something sexual has happened between them. With the boy shocked to see another boy with her, putting two and two together, he leaves heart-broken and walks back home. 

3rd Ancillary Task Research: Digipak 'The Age Of The Understatement' - The Last Shadow Puppets

For the first ancillary task, me and my working partner are researching into covers for the release as a part of a digipak. This digipak, called 'The Age Of The Understatement' by The Last Shadow Puppets has the traditional gatefold album layout.

Front cover

This digipak's front cover includes their name 'The last Shadow Puppets' and the album title 'The Age Of The Understatement'. Next to the title is a woman sitting on what looks like to be a pavement - the image has been edited,   
a filter has been placed over the image making this artwork black and white.





First contents side

The first contents page includes the credits of the album productions, who wrote what of the album and all the main details that tell the consumer where it was recorded, etc.
The colour of the page is kept to the rest of the digipak's house style. The cream background is prominent in most parts of the digipak and acts as background as long as there are no added artworks, for example, in the front cover there is a cream background with the artwork placed over this, leaving just a cream background edging.  

Second side - CD Album side

The second side of the inside of the digipak contains the CD for the album. Unlike my first researched digipak, this digipak still has the feature of homing the CD in a plastic holder, instead of a traditional sleeve homing the CD. Both the CD and the background behind the case follows the house style of the colour red, with the CD including the name of the album and the band's name.

The black and white theme is kept on the back cover where this side presents the song list of the album. The font style is also kept the same as the front cover where the band's name and album list is in the same font style.

2nd Ancillary Task Research: Digipak 'Champ' - Tokyo Police Club

For the first ancillary task, me and my working partner are researching into covers for the release as a part of a digipak. This digipak, called 'Gloss Drop' by Battles has the traditional gatefold album layout.

Front Cover

The front cover of the album includes the artwork graphics which consists of bright, vibrant colours - of what looks like to be a random selection of home accessories and other odd items not commonly associated with a home. 
In the the centre of the front cover is an upside-down white rectangle with the band's name in their styled font writing.





First Contents side -  Album list (including artwork pull out inside)

The first contents side of inside of the digipak is the song list on the album. The red in the background and the plain white writing is simplistic and follows the indie style theme that the band follows. 

Inside the sleeve of this side is the album's artwork (which is folded) and on the back of the artwork is all of the song's lyrics, credits and their website advertised.    




Second side - CD Album side

The second side of the inside of the digipak contains the CD for the album. Unlike my first researched digipak, this digipak still has the feature of homing the CD in a plastic holder, instead of a traditional sleeve homing the CD. The back cover includes another artwork graphic, however this piece of artwork shows the opposite of the front cover - the room is destroyed, the props used are broken and it is a mess. This could denote that after listening to this, being in chronological order of the digipak, the audience may see this artwork and interpret that after listening it has caused some destruction.

Front Cover 

This digipak, entitled 'Gloss Drop' denotes some form of visual element of colour, maybe paint. The front cover of the album shows a gooey substance, which is pink. The substance looks as if it has been dropped like paint, it is in no particular order and looks lumpy. The white background contrasts with the lumpy, pink gloss-like substance that the camera closes up on. This front cover is quite simplistic, does not include the album or artist's name. 











First Contents Side (including artwork pull out inside)

The first contents page inside the digipak includes the album name, artist's name and credits of the album production all in the same font and size: 'Produced by...', 'Recorded and mixed by...', etc. 
The contents page also has the artwork of the gloss substance but this time, in an extreme closeup. The whole of the contents page is covered with the artwork from the front cover artwork but from a different angle. Inside the sleeve of the page includes folded artwork. 


Second Contents Side (including CD album)

The second contents page includes a mention of the band's other albums, EPs and singles. The second side also includes the artwork which has 'spilled' over two pages. This side includes the CD which is tucked in the sleeve off the contents page.

Here, you can see the full contents, where the artwork is spread over two sides. You can also see that the traditional 'gatefold' digipak layout is kept in this album.  










Back cover - Album lists

On the back cover of the album, there is a list of all the songs from the album, crediting the other artists that are 'featured' on the song. There are twelve tracks in total, all in the same font and size. The barcode in the bottom right-hand corner is also shown on the other digipaks in the same place.

Here, you can see the full exterior view of digipak. You can see the back, middle/spine and the front cover. In comparison of the back and front cover, the same white/cream background applies giving a sense of house style.

5th Music Video Research: 'Keep Your Head Up' - Ben Howard

My working partner Chris has also researched into the chosen brief 'Music Video'.

'Keep Your Head Up' by Ben Howard has been analysed by Chris. 

This up beat, summery sing by Ben Howard has a video that fits to the song extremely well! We have Ben Howard and his touring band members build a huge water slide through the country side. the video is the building of the slide and it’s use. 

this is the opening shot of the video, the sepia filter to the shot gives it a warm summer feel, the low bearing sun also gives a warm, relaxed feel. this is quite a wide shot of fields with a tree in the background. 

After a close up of a bubble moving around we cut to…

This is a very low angle shot of Ben Howard moving some hay and a spade once again we have the low bearing sun in the distance, creating the same mood as in the previous shot 

The nest shot is a brief one of his passing past the camera..

Then this mid shot of  Ben carry the things again, the camera then pans along and follows him as he walks.These shots do connote a very pastoral way of living. 

We then cut between 3 or 4 shots of Ben walking then 3 shots of a wooded area introducing us to a new location.

 Then there is tracking shot following Ben carrying a bucket, a couple of shots so us him walking towards a river… 

Then there is a quite wide shot of him bending down the fill the bucket; The sun is always light the shots from obscure angels. 

then there are 2 shots of Ben filling the bucket from different angles

then we cut to this point of view shot of Ben looking at his feet in the water… You know, whatever floats your boat

Then there are a few shots of the sun through the tree tops, you know… summery.

Then there is a cool indie style shot of Ben from inside the bucket which is full of water. Very cool and stylistic. 

After this there is a quick succession of shots of Ben filling up the bucket some more. Are there holes in the bottom or something? 

Then this shot lingers for awhile and plays in slow motion; bubbles seem to be a recurring theme, this is a fairly wide shot.

Then the is a period of a couple of shots showing Ben walking places. there are about 5 of these shots. 

Then Ben climbs a pile of haybales… those sing song writers… The sun adds a contract to the video which gives the appearance of an all white background. 

Then it turns out the pile of haybales is actually on the back of a trailer and it moves away using a series of shots to show the movement, this is quite a wide/long shot.

the it cuts between shots of the Ben sitting on the trailer as it moves; after this there are a selection of shots showing Ben empty the trailer of the hay bales.  

Ben throwing some bales around, scaring some cows. 

The next 15-20’s are of Ben throwing bales around. 

Then Ben picks up a bale an then walks off, the levels of lighting are increasing as the video goes along, like the sun is rising through out the day.

Then we cut to this wide shot of Ben walking with the hay bale, this shows the tranquillity of the setting.

Then this close up of Ben give us the first clear look at him that we’ve had. This gives us a more familiarised sense with the character.

The next few shots are Ben walking through a wood area with the bale, with a series of arty, sepia tone shots, many are out of focus and blurry.

The we get this quite wide close up of him climbing some stairs, the fact he isn’t wearing shoes connotes a oneness with nature, and a very casual attitude. 

This is the first time in the video we see another person, the casualness of sitting in a tree is very relaxed, following the theme of the music video thus far.

In the next shot we get quite a wide shot with Ben in the back ground and the two new characters jumping out of the tree, this part of the video also coordinates with the lyrics, as at the point in the song the lyrics are “I saw a friend of mine the other day, and he told me that my eyes are gleaming…”

After some close ups of hands touching some wheat in fields we see the 3 of them walking through the field. this is quite a wide shot, but it is clearly focusing on Ben and the scenery, the other two characters just slightly in shot .

The next few shots are the group moving through the field changing between extreme long shots and close ups.

this shot shows the 3 all carrying hay bales this further backs up our ideas about theirs relationship, we can guess they are all close. 

The next few shots are a fast paced montage of the group moving hay bales. Then other male in the group starts to move some wood. The audience are still left in the dark when it comes to what they are actually doing with all these materials. 

The group continue to move materials around and the others start moving wood…

This low angles shot has the light source in the top right of the screen, giving a caesura style effect as the light from the sun contrasts with the shadow of the tree.

This is the first shot we get where we see what the group are building. This shot tracks side ways and shows both Ben and the woman working on the structure. the lighting is no much less bright, it looks much cooler, showing a much better temperature to work in. 

next we have a fast paced sequence of shots tracking Ben run though a wooded area, this piece of fast paced editing shows a rushed feel and even excitement. 

Finally we see what the group has been working on, it appears to be a massive water slide! the fast pace editing follows Ben as he runs and jumps onto the slide, while the other male throws water down the slide. This is quite a wide shot.

Then the next few shots are tracking Ben as he makes his way down the slide, the shots mix between quite wide shots of large parts of the slide to close ups of Ben. (this looks so fun!)

The editing increase is speed at this point in the video, this connotes excitement and fun goings on. 

The camera is then at certain points on the slide and the cuts when Ben appears to slide over the camera.

Then we cut to a ‘tracking shot’ The camera appears to be held by someone following Ben down the slide. This is in a very handi cam style. 

The montage of shots tracking the 3 going down the slide continues but we then linger on this shot for a few seconds as one person passes on the slide. This shot draws us to the perfect scenario, we have pristine weather conditions, a really pastoral scene with the peaceful wood, Ben being with his friends and the great time the are having with the slide. 

The montage continues, but the next notable shot is one of Ben holding the camera as he goes down the slide, this then happens with the other two

This shot is looking down at the slide from a tree, as each person slides through the shot we cut to the next person sliding through it.

The next montage of shots all occur three times; each shot for each person. 

Then we see this wide shot of all three on one part of the slide together .(still looks very fun.)

The next few go back to the handi cam, this time when held the person holding the cam points it at the others in the group, the camera goes around the group multiple times, creating a range of different shots The next shot we get that isn’t handi cam is a wide(ish) shot of the 3 reaching the end of the slide, and them all ending up in a big pile.

The final shot is of all three jumping into the body of water we saw earlier, this shot still has the handi cam filter on it, and then the camera man proceeds to jump in after them.

This is the last shot of the video. the camera emerges from the water line to see the other 3 celebrating and generally being jolly. 

This video has a very personal feel to it, it’s a very indie video and it is perfectly tailored to the artists image, but I believe this isn’t the type of video we are aiming for but there may be elements we could adapt to fit our purposes.
